Dorothy J. Hammer, 76, of Mifflintown, went to be with her Lord at 4:29 p.m., on Thursday, June 9, 2011, at her home, surrounded by her family and friends.

Born on Monday, Oct. 22, 1934, in Newburg, Franklin County, she was a daughter of the late Leroy and Reba (Booth) Daihl.

On Oct. 10, 1953, she married her surviving husband, John F. "Fred" Hammer, with whom she shared more than 57 years of marriage.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Debra J. Finkenbinder, and her husband James, of Carlisle, Donna M. Albaugh and her husband William, Rhonda K. Fry and her husband Mark, all of Mifflintown and Wanda R. Lindsey, and her companion Pete Fasnaeht, of Carlisle; two sisters, Lucille McGee and her husband Larry, Delores Parson and her husband William, all of Shippensburg; one former son-in-law, Bill Lindsey of Mechanicsburg and she leaves behind seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two step great-grandsons.

Preceding her in death were two sisters, Frances Martin and Betty Daihl, as well as twin siblings Edward and Edna Daihl, who died in infancy.

Mrs. Hammer was a former member of the Cross Keys United Methodist Church, where she served in the Ladies Auxiliary and was currently a member of the New Beginning Community Church, Spruce Hill Road, Port Royal.

Until her retirement in 2005, Dorothy served as a Cafeteria Manager at Lack Tuscarora Elementary School for more than 38 years. She also worked at the former 75 Dairy Dine in East Waterford.

First and foremost, her family and friends were the light of her life. Her gift of hospitality was clearly prevalent during Christmas, her favorite time of year, when she enjoyed cooking and baking. Her gift of compassion showed in her care and consideration for others. Dorothy always enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends, shopping trips with her daughters and friends, and she had a passion for collecting porcelain dolls and stuffed bears, especially Boyd's Bears.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., on Monday, June 13, 2011, at the New Beginning Community Church, Spruce Hill Road, Port Royal, with Pastor Frank Swartz and Pastor Dennis Thompson officiating.

Interment followed in the East Waterford Cemetery.

The viewing was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., on Sunday, June 12, 2011, and from 9 a.m. until the time of service, on Monday, June 13, 2011, at the Church.

For those who wish, memorial contributions in Mrs. Hammer's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 324 S. Logan Blvd., Suite B, Burnham, PA 17009; the SUN Home Hospice, P.O. Box 232, Northumberland, PA 17857 or to her church, New Beginning Community Church, 2118 Spruce Hill Road, Port Royal, PA 17082.
