Francis "Frank" Markey was the son of Patrick Markey (born 1812, Ireland) and
Catherine (maiden name unknown; born 1819, Massachusetts). Frank was living at
home with his parents at New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1850 (1850 US Census).
Sometime thereafter he moved to California with his parents and was living at
Fort Jones, Siskiyou County, by 1860 (1860 US Census). During the Civil War
Frank enlisted as a private at Fort Jones August 28, 1863, and was mustered into
Company F, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers, on February 19, 1864. Private
Markey was mustered out at Camp Lincoln, California, June 9, 1865 (Orton, 846).
After the war he returned to Fort Jones (1870 US Census, 1878 Siskiyou Great
Register). He was a member of Etna's McClellan Post, No. 52, Grand Army of the
Republic, and served as Post Chaplain in 1886 (Register of the Department of
California, G.A.R., 1886). Frank died at Fort Jones two years later and was
buried in this cemetery. His mother filed for a Civil War veteran survivor's
pension September 5, 1890, and received application No. 477,042.
