He was captured by the Confederates at the September 20, 1862 Battle of Shepherdstown, (West) Virginia. Exchanged, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant, Field and Staff, on January 17, 1863, and served until he was honorably mustered out June 1, 1865.
