Grace Evelyn Kephart, 100, of Sinking Valley and a guest at the Altoona Center for Nursing Care, died Tuesday morning at the center.
She was born in Huston Township, Blair County, daughter of Preston and Fannie (Lehman) Smith. She married Henry T. Kephart on April 20, 1940, at the home of the bride in Martinsburg, and Henry preceded her in death July 31, 1997.
Surviving are a daughter, Kathleen Laverne (Terry) Fike of Sinking Valley; a son, Preston H. (Janet) of Altoona; seven grandchildren: Darla Stehman, Laurie Morris, Sherry Stricek, Joy Williams, Betsy Kephart, Preston Kephart II and John Kephart; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Belva Bartges and Miriam Royer, both of Martinsburg.
She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Marjorie.
Grace was a 1929 graduate of Morrison Cove High School. With her husband, she owned and operated a dairy farm in Sinking Valley. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Sinking Valley and also belonged to the Golden Age Club, the Lutheran Church Women and the Sinking Valley Grange. She had held various offices with the local, county and state granges and had attained the Seventh Degree, the highest level in the grange. She had received a pin on her 100th birthday for 82 years of membership in the grange, having joined in 1928.
Grace enjoyed growing flowers, cooking and studying and reading her Bible and liked to correspond with family and friends.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone, and 10 to the 11 a.m. funeral service Friday, June 3, 2011, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Sinking Valley, the Rev. T.M. Talbot Moses officiating. Interment will be made at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
