VIRGINIA BEACH -- Hundreds of police officers from Virginia and elsewhere gathered Tuesday Jan 21, 2003 to remember a fallen colleague.
Norfolk, Virgnia Police Officer Sheila Herring, 39, was fatally shot last week outside a sports bar. Friends, family and colleagues gathered for her memorial for nearly two hours at The Rock Church.
Herring began her career with the Detroit police and joined the Norfolk force last year. She became the first woman from the city force to die in the line of duty.
Police say she was shot early Thursday by 35-year-old Mario Robert Keen, who was in turn killed by gunfire from officers outside Champion Sports Bar & Grill on East Brambleton Avenue.
She was buried in Detroit in Full Honors beside her daughter 6-yr old Aleisha Herring who was killed in a car accident involving the babysitter.
