In the 1880 Dade County Census Sarah Jane was 21 years old. Her occupation is teaching.

The 1910 Dade County, MO Census lists Sarah J Cowan, 51, living with her father Alexander, 79, and her niece "Zerra" P (Zena Pearl) Cowan, 9.

In 1920 Greenfield, Dade County, MO Sarah J Cowan, 60, and niece Lena (Zena), 18, live together. Zena is attending school. In 1930 Sarah J, 71, is living on her own at Greenfield.

Sarah's niece Zena Pearl Cowan, 1901-1998, married John S Story. Both are buried at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, Kansas.

The Greenfield Vedette, June 4, 1942 -- Sarah Jane Cowan daughter of Alexander and Virginia Maze Cowan was born in Polk County, MO near Fair Play, on March 27, 1859, and died at the hospital in Nevada, MO May 30, 1942, at age 83 years, 3 months and 2 days. In her youth she confessed faith in Christ and joined the Christian Church at Bona. She was a graduate of Old Ozark College at Greenfield, and did post-graduate work at the Bristol, TN School.
Surviving are two sisters: Ida Holman of Greenfield and Inez Ireson of Stockton; eight nieces and seven nephews; many other relatives and friends whose loyal friendship have been a comfort through the many years of illness. Funeral services and interment were at the Morris Cemetery, in the Bona neighborhood Monday afternoon, June 1st, with the Rev, Hanna L Almon of Greenfield Presbyterian officiating. The music was furnished by a quartet from the Church of Christ in Bona.

At the time of her death Sarah, 83, had been a resident of the state hospital at Nevada about five years. Her usual residence was Greenfield, MO. Her death was due to Arteriosclorosis and Senility.
