Death: Jun. 3, 2011

R&B Vocalist. He was awarded a football scholarship to the Southern University at Baton Rouge and while attending there, he began performing in various vocal groups. Following a stint with the US Army, Spellman's first break in entertainment came as a member of Huey "Piano" Smith's ensemble The Clowns. He will perhaps be best remembered for providing the bass vocals on Ernie K-Doe's 1961 number one hit "Mother-In-Law". Spellman also became noted for his Billboard Top-100 recordings "Lipstick Traces (On a Cigarette)", later popularized by the O'Jays and "Fortune Teller", with a later version by the Rolling Stones. Following his career in the music industry, Spellman worked for Miller Beer. He was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2009. He died of complications from respiratory failure. (bio by: C.S.)
