US Congressman. He was born in Groton, Massachusetts, where he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1789. Long active in state politics, his time on the national stage was brief. In 1814 Dana was elected as a Republican to the Thirteenth Congress to complete the term of William M. Richardson, who had resigned; he represented Massachusetts' 4th District for just over five months, from September 22, 1814 to March 3, 1815. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection. His activities as a regional politician and jurist include membership in the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1803, 1825 to 1827) and State Senate (1805 to 1812, 1817), attorney for Middlesex County (1807 to 1811), Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas (1811 to 1812), and as a delegate to the 1820 State Constitutional Convention. Dana's career ended as it began, with private law practice in Groton. He died in Charlestown, Massachusetts. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
