DEATH OF MRS. G. E. ST. JOHN
END COMES TO CARTHAGE WOMAN THIS MORNING

Had Been Sick Only a Few Days - Had Been Connected With The Press For More Than Thirty Years

Mrs. G. E. St. John died at 8:40 o'clock this morning at her home on South Garrison avenue after a brief illness. Uraemic poisoning as the result of chronic Bright's disease was the cause of death.
Some two weeks or more ago Mrs. St. John suffered a slight attack of grip and had been feeling badly ever since, but not until a day or two ago did her indisposition take a serious turn and not until yesterday was it realized that she was critically sick.
For more than 30 years Mrs. St. John had been actively connected with the PRESS, and up to two years ago last fall when she resigned her position because of ill health, she had long been in charge of the business office of this paper. Her earlier connection with the paper was as one of the partners in its ownership, which continued till 1896 when she and her brother-in-law A. W. St. John, sold their interests in the paper to the present owner. Mrs. St. John continued with the paper in a salaried position, however, till a little more than two years ago, rounding out, as above stated, a period of more than 30 years' service.

Last June when the Carthage militia company with the other Missouri troops was ordered to the Mexican border she consented to return to her duties at the PRESS office for a portion of each day while her successor in the business office of this paper was on duty at the front. She continued her work till last Saturday evening, and while she had been feeling badly for two weeks or more because of her recent attack of grip, she left the office Saturday afternoon with the expectation of returning on Monday morning. On Monday she was too ill to do so, however, and she grew steadlily worse till the end came this morning.

Mrs. St. John's maiden name was Lucy Bachus. She was born June 20, 1854 at Columbus, Ohio and was consequently a little more than 62 years of age. She came to Carthage from Des Moines, Iowa about 1870 with her mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. John Yost, both of whom are now dead. She was married in Carthage on September 25, 1874 to G. E. St. John, who survives her. Besides her husband she leaves a daughter Mrs. Mary Boon and a grandson, Gordon Wylie, both of this city. Another daughter, Mrs. Caroline Margaret Wylie died on February 2, 1908.
Mrs. St. John's only brother, Charles Bachus, lives at Seabrook, Texas. His son, Elijah Bachus, a nephew of Mrs. St. John, who formerly resided here, now lives in California. A sister, Mrs. Mary Ullman, also known in Carthage, died in 1903.

Because of her long residence here and her prominence as a business woman, Mrs. St. John was widely known in Carthage and to a considerable extent throughout the county. To all the new of her death coming so suddenly, Will be a great shock.
She was a woman of unusual ablility in many lines, and because of her talent as a writer and her capability in business matters, she readily adapted herself to all branches of the newspaper business, in which she was exceptionally skilled. To the PRESS force, many of whom had served with her over a long period of years, her death comes as a personal bereavement. She was of a bright, cheerful disposition, with a wonderful capacity for work and a remarkable memory, all of which combined to make her an invaluable aid in the PRESS office, and when her counsel was sought it was always with the knowledge that her judgement was almost invariably good, unbiased and logical.

The funeral was held at the residence, 2331 South Garrison avenue. Rev. H. E. Martin, rector of Grace Episcopal Church officiated. Burial in Park Cemetery
