George T. Cunningham, of Sutherlin, Oregon and well known Appraiser in Douglas County, died on August 29, 2009. George was born in Paducah, Kentucky April 23, 1929 to A.G. Cunningham and Elizabeth Prince Cunningham. The Cunningham families are well known in Western Kentucky. George's Great, great, great Grandfather moved to Trigg county Kentucky in 1818. They previously had been neighbors and close friends of Thomas Jefferson in Charlottesville, Virginia. George graduated from Trigg County High School in 1947. After high school, George attended the University of Kentucky and Murray State College. George then joined the United State Air Force and served as a weather man. In 1952 George moved to Colorado. On March 31, 1954, George met the Love of his life at a dance in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Two months later on June 1, 1954 they were married and danced thru 55 years of marriage. Soon after George and Joanne's marriage they moved to Owensboro, Kentucky. It was at this time George discovered the second love of his life "Being a Real Estate Appraiser" and continuing in the business for 54 years. During this time the family lived in Louisville, Kentucky. Lexington, Kentucky, Greensboro, North Carolina, Orange County, California and Sacramento, California. In September of 1993, we moved to Sutherlin, Oregon to be near our daughters Elizabeth and family and Myrna Gayle and family. During the 54 years as an appraiser, George served as a property tax mass appraiser, single family appraiser, multi family appraiser, single family and multi family underwriter. George often said he has appraised everything from an outhouse to an IBM plant. George worked 23 years with FHA/HUD. George and Joanne opened their own private Appraisal Company in 1987. George was a member of Review Appraiser and Mortgage Underwriters and National Association of Real Estate Appraisers, Also serving as President of the Sacramento Chapter and as a Member of the National Ethics Committee. Locally, George is a member of the St. George Episcopal Church, Member of the Roseburg County Club and served approx. 5 years on the Sutherlin Planning Commission. George is survived by Joanne, his beloved wife of 55 years; Son Keith and his wife Linda and daughter Katie Lexington, Kentucky; Daughter Elizabeth Altman and husband Dan of Sutherlin, Oregon and their children Dawn Teed and family and Christopher Daniel Altman and wife Shauna; daughter Myrna Gayle Dooley and husband Ken of Vancouver, Washington and their boys Jason and Casey. George has five grandchildren and three great grandchilren. George is also survived by his brother Charles Cunningham and his wife and their two boys and four grandchildren; His step-sister Louetta Hoodenpyle and her two boys and three grandchildren. A brief memorial service will be held at St. George's Episcopal Church 1024 SE Cass Ave., Roseburg, Oregon, Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 2:00 p.m.
