Newell Sanders
Birth: Jul. 12, 1850
Death: Jan. 26, 1939
Lookout Mountain
Hamilton County
Tennessee, USA

US Senator. Born in Bloomington, Indiana, he graduated from Indiana University in 1873, then owned and operated a book store in Bloomington, until he moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1877. There he became a manufacturer of agricultural implements and was member of the Chattanooga school board (1881-82). He was president of the Chattanooga Plow Company (1882-1901) and a member of the board of directors of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway. In 1912, he was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Robert L. Taylor and served until 1913. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed his manufacturing pursuits until he retired in 1927. He died at age 88 at his home on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
