James Leard was a native of South Carolina, his wife of Georgia. During the War of 1812 he was what was then known as a ranger, engaged in guarding the frontier from the Indians. During the time, his wife was in Hill's block-house fort in Randolph county, as most of the settlers were compelled to seek refuge there.
