| Birth: | Nov. 15, 1738 | | Death: | Aug. 25, 1822 |  Born Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel in Hanover, Germany, son of the oboist in a military band. (The name 'Gulielmi' is a latinization which he never used). He came to England in the 1750s. Began his career as a musician and was acknowledged as a fine violinist and organist, and a talented composer. Became interested in astronomy in the 1770s. His observations led him to discover the planet Uranus in 1781. Invited by the King to become Astronomer Royal, he left his musical career. Knighted in 1817.
