John was born soon after his parents reached Knox Co., TN. His father died when he was 18, and he was bequeathed one-half of his father's home place, to become his at maturity. He lived his entire life on the home place, and devoted himself to farming. The Flenniken private cemetery in which he is buried is located on the original farm. He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, Knoxville. John was a veteran of the War of 1812.
