Ryan married Rosanna Fauber 1 Mar 1835 in Greene Co., OH. In 1842 they were living in Union Co., OH. Ryan had received an inheritance from his grandfather Mathias Crow/Gray in 1836 and from his mother Jane Paugh Crow/Gray in 1828. He purchased a large farm in Union Co. and four of his six children were born there. In 1855 the family would move to Prescott, Pierce Co., Wisconsin. Shortly, Rosanna would die and Ryan would remarry back in Ohio, Lucy Ellen Bowie. One child was born of this second marriage. William Gray the oldest son would die in the Civil War a result of wounds suffered at the Battle of Thompson's Hill in Mississippi and is buried at Vicksburg National Cem. Abraham, the only surviving son would serve in the 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery, a 90 day enlistment in 1864-65 and survive the war.

The 1870 and 1880 census show another adopted son Rolla D. Gray. He was given $1000 from his adoptive father's estate. He disappears after his step-mother gives him little of her estate, in fact he sues the estate.
