Born in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, England, he graduated form the Royal Military College at Sandhurst in 1882 and was commissioned an officer in the British Army. As a Colonel in 1899, he commanded a regiment in the South African 2nd Boer War, where made his reputation as an officer in action and was known to his troops as "the Bull". Promoted a Major General at the start of World War I, he went to France where commanded the V Corps and the 3rd Army and was successful in the Second Battle of Yeper, Ypres and the capture of Vimy Ridge. In 1917, during an offensive in the Middle East, he defeated the Turkish Army. After the war, he was promoted Field Marshal in 1919 and was the British High Commissioner in Egypt, until his retirement in 1925. He died from a cerebral aneurysm at age 75 in London, England.
