Born about 1833 near Leesburg, Southampton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; eldest son of Harmon Hillsberry. With his father and siblings, William moved in 1853 to East Bend Township, Champaign County, Illinois, where his father purchased land in 1853 and 1855. William died of disease on 5 March 1863 in Washington Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, and was buried probably in Memphis National Cemetery.
