Joshua Alexander was the 3rd child of 10, born to Charles Thomas and Rebecca Rice (Hix) Philpot. He was the brother of
William Allen, John Hix, Sarah E., Demarcus Samuel, Thomas Barton, Nancy Ann, James M.,Elisha Collins and Charles N. Philpot. Joshua enlisted in the Civil War in Co "F" 41st Tenn Inf. He came home on furlough and encouraged his brother DeMarcus to return with him and enlist. This he did, enlisting in the Confederate Army at Camp Trousdale on 26 November 1861. They were both captured at the battle of Fort Donelson on 16 February 1862. They were sent by boat to Cairo, Illinois and then by rail to Camp Morton, Indiana near Indianapolis. Joshua and DeMarcus both died of Typhoid Fever. Joshua is listed as buried in Crown Hill Cemetery and in 1920 moved to what is now known as Garfield Park. A stone monument was erected memorializing 38 Confederate POWs, soldiers of the 32nd and 41st Tennessee Infantry Regiments who died during March and April 1862.

Note: Died as a Confederate Prisoner of War at Camp Morton, originally interred at Green Lawn Cemetery (Confederate Section), but reinterred in 1933 in a mass grave of 1616 Confederate POW'S at Crown Hill.
