Brooks, William F. Jr. age 81, of Minneapolis, passed away peacefully at University of Pennsylvania Hospital on January 2, 2008 with his family at his side.

The Brooks family had gathered in Philadelphia for their wonderful annual Christmas reunion before Mr. Brooks became gravely ill.

Survived by loving wife, Jean Geggie Brooks; son, William Brooks III; daughter, Elizabeth Brooks; son-in- law, Neil Olson; grandchildren, Will, Maggie and Becca Olson; as well as the entire Perry family: Karin, Joe, Caroline, Peter and Jane, and their families.

Mr. Brooks was born in Kansas City, MO, lived in Scarsdale, NY, and attended schools in Paris and England when his father was stationed in London as Bureau Chief for the Associated Press.

He started at Union College, Schenectady NY, at age 15, but left to join the Navy, serving as a radio radar operator in the Pacific for two years. He returned to graduate from Union in 1947.

He came to Minneapolis in 1948 to work as a reporter at the Minneapolis Tribune.

He met Jean, was married in 1951, and started his family.

Presidency in the Newspaper Guild furthered his interest in politics and the law.

He attended the University of Minnesota Law School, graduating with honors in 196l.

Mr. Brooks served as an Assistant Attorney General under Walter F. Mondale, and left public service to establish the law firm then-named Chestnut, Jones, Brooks, Kennedy and Burkhardt. His legal practice soon specialized in legislative lobbying.

Bill's interest in governance was strong, active and life-long. He relished his role as an advisor to the candidates and managers of countless DFL campaigns. His institutional memory of Minnesota politics was often sought, and greatly valued.

Since April 1995 he served on the Board of Directors of the U.S. Federal Credit Union, demonstrating a career-long commitment to the credit union movement, and providing him many years of fulfillment and satisfaction.

A funeral service and memorial will be held 11 a.m., Saturday January 19, 2008, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1917 Logan Ave. So., Minneapolis MN 55403. Private interment services will occur later, at Fort Snelling.
