Victor S. Bouwell, Masonic Leader, Dead.
Victor S. Boutwell, 72, foreman of the bookbinding department of the State Printing Plant for 35 years, and prominent in Masonic circles, died Friday night at his home, 1108 Harrison Street.
He was born March 25, 1871, in Butler county, Kansas and had been a resident of Topeka practically his entire life. He learned the bookbinding trade in a Topeka shop. During his early career as a bookbinder, the State Legislature elected a State Printer, and he assisted with the state printing for several years before the state had a plant of its own.
After the law was changed to permit the voters to elect a State Printer, he served under every State Printer, starting with the late Thomas A. McNeal, until he retired in October 1941.
He was prominent in Masonic circles for many years and was intensely interested in Masonic activities. He was a past master of Siloam Lodge No. 225, AF & AM. and was a member of the Scottish Rite and Yorke Rite bodies, the Topeka Commandery No. 5, Knights Templars and Beulah Chapter No. 34, OES. He probably participated in more Masonic funerals than any other Topekan during the many years he was a member of the order. He also was a member of the Topeka Bookbinders Union No. 223.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Lina Boutwell; a son Delbert V. Boutwell, Silver Springs, Md., two grandsons, three sisters, Mrs. Effie Roussell, Topeka, Mrs. Elsie V. Fletcher, Philadelphia, Pa., and Mrs. Hazel Locke, Oklahoma City, Okla.; three brothers; Irving, Verne D., and Dan W. Boutwell, all of Topeka.
