Russell C. Marty, age 86 of Verona, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Friday, May 27, 2011, in the home he was born in on Dec. 24, 1924.

Russ was united in marriage to Marjorie Maurer on Aug. 11, 1948, at St. James Lutheran Church, Verona. He farmed his entire life on the Marty Century Homestead with his wife and son, Ron, until 2009, when they sold their dairy herd. He was very proud of the fact that he got five families started in their farming careers at his second farm.

Russ graduated from Verona High School in 1943 where he received 15 letters in sports, including boxing, football, basketball and baseball. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council. Russ was a 4-H Dairy Leader as well as a member of the FFA Alumni and the Wisconsin Farm Bureau. He was treasurer of the Gordon School Board and also served on the board of directors of the Bank of Verona for 25 years.

Russ was an avid sportsman, especially enjoying his fishing trips up north with family and friends. He also liked to hunt around the family farm. He followed his favorite sports teams, the Packers, Brewers and Badgers. Russ loved playing cards and was a member of the "Odd Fellows" neighborhood card group for 49 years and also played in the Sugar River Euchre League for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marge; four children, John (Cathie), Carla (Joe) Poast, Joanne (Greg) Kendall and Ron (Peggy); 10 grandchildren, Meghan (Julio Barros) Marty, Melissa (David Snyder) Marty, Amanda Poast, Jordan (Erica) Poast, Sarah (Randy) Anderson, Elizabeth (Jeremy) Gleason, Joel Kendall, Mary (Dave) Neill, and Lisa and Jenna Marty; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Ginny (Clarence) Witt; and brother, Paul (Dorothy) Marty.
