U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Moving with his parents to Ohio in 1819, he attended the Chillicothe Academy, was private secretary to the Governor 1834, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1835 and practiced law in Ross County, Ohio. In 1845, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth Congress, serving until 1847. Declining to me a candidate for reelection, he was an associate justice of the Ohio Supreme Court (1851-54) and as court chief justice (1854-56). An unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Governor of Ohio in 1867, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving (1869-81). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed by President James Garfield a member of the international monetary conference in Paris, France in 1881. He then resumed the practice of law and was unsuccessful candidate for Vice President of the United States, in 1888.
