Mass of Christian Burial for Wendy will be held on Friday, June 29, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. Dale Kinzler will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Lake Region Honor Guard. Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus at 7:00 p.m. and the Scripture Service will be at 7:30 p.m. The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will provide the Honor Guard. Visitation on Friday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass.
Serving as Casket Bearers for Wendell will be Derek, Jeremy and Travis Matz, Gary Steffan, Mike Zimmer, Michael Schall, Gerald Schall, John Steffan, and J.J. (Jacob John) Schall Reading the Scriptures will be Linda Gaa and Marla Endres. Music will be provided by Patty Cote.
Wendell was born at rural Crary, ND on September 15, 1931 to John and Carolina (Miller) Schall. He was raised and educated in the Crary area.
He served in the U.S. Army from January 1951 to January 1954 with the Eighth Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three bronze service stars. After his discharge, he returned to the Crary area. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Steffan on April 12, 1956 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crary. They established their home in Devils Lake. Wendell managed Cox's Bakery for 18 years. Then he owned and operated the Mayer Café for 6 years, then was Kitchen Supervisor at the Good Samaritan Center for 2 years. In 1979, he bought the Lunch Box Café, which he operated for 17 years. Wendell retired in 1996.
Wendell was a member of St Joseph Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years. He was also a Honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus Third Degree and the Fr. Maurice Jaeger Assembly of Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #756.
Wendell is survived by his Wife of 51 years, Elizabeth of Devils Lake Son: David Schall and his wife, Bonnie of Bismarck, ND Daughters: Shirley Schall of Devils Lake Marilyn Matz and her husband, James of Rosemount, MN Granddaughter: Rachel Schall Grandsons: Jack Schall, Derek Matz, Jeremy Matz, and Travis Matz Brother: Bert Schall of Devils Lake Sisters: Barbara Dodgson, Lena Bertsch, Veronica (Nick) Leiphon also Devils Lake Ann Holler of Crary, ND Rosie Fossen of Maddock, ND Katie Reynen of Davis, Oklahoma Eleanor Jacobs of Dixon, California Esther (Sid) Mason of Price, Utah Sisters-In-Law: Regina Schall and Geraldine Schall of Devils Lake Judy Schall of Oneida, South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son in infancy, Stephen Joseph; brothers, Lawrence, Frank, and Jack Schall; and 3 sisters in infancy.
