Gwenive Catherine Dinkel, 98, passed away May 17 at the Elmcrest Retirement Community in Harlan where she had resided for the past six years.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., May 21 at the Logan United Methodist Church with Pastor Jack Hofmockel officiating. Organist was Barb Sherer and vocalist David Dickinson. Jacob Lemons performed a saxophone solo to "Amazing Grace." Vocal selections were, "Blessed Assurance," and "How Great Thou Art." Honorary bearers were Debra Klein, Jill Wright, Cathy Powell, Julie Swenson, Christine DeWitt and Victoria Tucker. Casket bearers were Michael Mindrup, Robb Schmidt, Kevin Dinkel, Douglas Mindrup, Jay Schmidt, Gary Lemons, Eric Buter. Final resting place was the Logan Cemetery.
Gwen was born Aug. 30, 1912 in Blockton, Iowa, the second of five children of Lena and Allen Stephens. She grew up in the Diagonal area and attended Diagonal High School, where she met her future husband, Robert Dinkel. During her high school years, Gwen earned the admiration of her fellow students and instructors and was prominent in school activities. She graduated from Diagonal High School in 1931. On June 30, 1933, Gwen was united in marriage to Robert Dinkel in the Methodist parsonage in Diagonal. Robert's job necessitated many moves during the first years of their married life. In 1942 they moved to Logan where they made their home for the next 61 years. Gwenive and Robert celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2003. As a mother of five, Gwen was always very supportive of their many activities, concerts, plays and sporting events in which her children participated. Gwen was a long-time member of the Logan United Methodist Church and was awarded a lifetime membership in the United Methodist Women for her many years of service and devotion to their organization. Gwen also earned the reputation as an excellent seamstress and cook. In February of 2005, Gwen moved to the Elmcrest Community, where she enjoyed the many new friends she made there. She looked forward to visits from her children and especially delighted in visits from her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Reflecting on her life several years ago, Gwen commented, "I wonder why the Lord has let me live so long. It's been wonderful."
Survivors include her daughters, Muriel Lemons and husband Bill of Harlan; Barbara Schmidt and husband Jerry of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Linda Mindrup and husband Larry of Clive; Diana Butler and husband Larry of Grinnell; son, Alvin Dinkel and wife Judy of Logan; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren.
Gwen was preceded in death by her husband Robert, parents, brothers Gayland and W.A.; sisters, Guelda Moon and Galene Varner.
