Gwen was born Aug. 30, 1912 in Blockton, Iowa, the second of five children of Lena and Allen Stephens. She grew up in the Diagonal area and attended Diagonal High School, where she met her future husband, Robert Dinkel. During her high school years, Gwen earned the admiration of her fellow students and instructors and was prominent in school activities. She graduated from Diagonal High School in 1931. On June 30, 1933, Gwen was united in marriage to Robert Dinkel in the Methodist parsonage in Diagonal. Robert's job necessitated many moves during the first years of their married life. As a mother of five, Gwen was always very supportive of their many activities, concerts, plays and sporting events in which her children participated. Gwen was a long-time member of the Logan United Methodist Church and was awarded a lifetime membership in the United Methodist Women for her many years of service and devotion to their organization. Gwen also earned the reputation as an excellent seamstress and cook. In February of 2005, Gwen moved to the Elmcrest Community, where she enjoyed the many new friends she made there. She looked forward to visits from her children and especially delighted in visits from her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Reflecting on her life several years ago, Gwen commented, "I wonder why the Lord has let me live so long. It's been wonderful."
