EAST PALESTINE - John T. Meek, 78, of North Pleasant Drive, passed away at 2:25 p.m. Thursday at the Salem Community Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past several days.
Mr. Meek was born May 23, 1933 in Newton, Iowa, a son of the late Elden and Evalyn Taggart Meek, and was a life resident of the community. He had been employed with the East Palestine Police Department for twenty-five years, retiring in 1995, and had served as its interim chief for 10 days at one time. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was a fifty year member of the First United Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Meek is survived by his wife, the former Klare Whitaker; two sons, James and William Meek; and a daughter, Lynn Jeffers, all of East Palestine. He also leaves a brother, Frederic B. Meek, Thomasboro, IL; six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren
In addition to his parents, a brother, Robert J. Meek, had preceded him in death.
The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the First United Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Michael Parker, officiating. Burial will follow in Glenview Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the combined units of the American Legion Post 31 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4579. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral home.
