| Birth: | 1922 | | Death: | 1987 |  Musician. Born in Vernon, Tennessee, he was regarded as one of the best and most accomplished popular fiddle players in country music. Nicknamed Howdy, he began his music career with a group known as the "Tennessee Valley Boys" in the 1930s and then joined Bill Monroe's "Bluegrass Boys" staying with the group until he was drafted into military service in 1942. After his discharge in 1945, he rejoined the "Bluegrass Boys" recording his signature songs "Wild Fiddler's Rag", "Memory Waltz", "Weeping Heart", and "Rutland's Reel". In 1951, he became a member of Roy Acuff's "Smokey Mountain Boys", which became one of the most popular groups ever to appear on the Grand Ole Opry. He remained with the group until his death.
