William Barron Pressly, son of Richard McMillen and Mary [née Barron] Pressly, was born March 2nd 1828 in the area around York County, South Carolina along the North Carolina border.

William was a graduate of Erskine College in Due West in July 1849; after which he was a teacher in Steele Creek North Carolina. But deciding to also preach; he returned to Due West and graduated from Erskine Theological Seminary in December of 1853. His ordination and installation service took place at New Sterling A.R.P. in Iredell County, North Carolina on November 9th 1855.

On May 26th 1858, Rev. Pressly married Miss Lorenna Evelina Harris, a former student of his early teaching years. He and Lorenna had the following known children:
John McMillen "Mason" (1859-1891)
Samuel Harris (1861-1865)
William Frances (1864-1929)
Leon Taylor (1870-1933)

During the Civil War years, Rev. Pressly returned to teaching and became associated with Professor H. T. Burke's Male Academy in Statesville, North Carolina in 1866. The school flourished for a number of years, and did good work for the cause of education in general and the pulpit in particular. When the office of County Superintendent was created about 1880, he was elected to fill that responsible place, and such was his efficiency that the August preceding his death the position was put upon him again.

Rev. William Pressly was a missionary pastor; while being pastor of New Sterling A.R.P., remaining there until April 8th. 1878. His belief was that building missions was the way to strengthen the mother church. On May 17, 1878, he was installed pastor over Statesville, N. C. having moved there the preceding year.

Rev. Pressly's health had been failing the last few years, due to heart conditions. It has been reported that after finishing his sermon for the next day, Rev. Pressly retire to bed on the evening of November 25th 1883 and died shortly after at about 10 P.M.; leaving a heart-broken wife and his three surviving sons.

Much talk was made about his burial, with services held in his church at Statesville; the City of Statesville wanting him buried in the city cemetery with promised appropriate monument assured. But his intimate friends and family preferred the country church yard at New Sterling A.R.P.; where his pastoral & educational duties first started. So, it was here that he was laid to rest.

BURIAL OF REV. W.B. PRESSLY

The remains of the late Rev. W.B. Pressly were carried out to the Stirling graveyard yesterday morning for interment. They were attended from town by quite a large concourse, and they were met at Stirling by a very large congregation. The remains were carried into the church, which the good man had served so long and faithfully and touching remarks were made by Revs. J.B. Marsh and W.M. Hunter. The prayer offered by Mr. Marsh impressed all present very deeply, by its beauty and pathos. After the exercises in the church all that is mortal of Rev. W.B. Pressly was committed to the earth.
