The life of beloved Lubbock musician, Don "Donnie" Allison, will be celebrated in a memorial "Last Concert" on Saturday, May 28, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Trinity Church, 7002 Canton Avenue. He passed from this life on Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at Vista Care Hospice after a courageous journey with cancer.
Don McKinzie Allison, 49, was born March 26, 1962, in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he lived until he and his family moved to Lubbock in 1970. He attended Coronado High School and Texas Tech University and was a graduate of South Plains College. At the time of his death, he was employed with GrantWorks.
Donnie will be most remembered publicly for his legacy of writing and performing music. He began his early career performing in various venues locally with the band Impeccable. Donnie later joined the band, The Nelsons. With Donnie as their front man, The Nelsons won the MTV Basement Tapes competition, receiving national notoriety with a song he composed. After seven years with The Nelsons, Donnie performed as the lead singer for the P.J. Belly Blues Band. Donnie also starred in the Texas Tech Summer Theatre production of "Jesus Christ Superstar." During the last 15 years, Donnie performed as an integral member of the Cactus Theatre productions, providing many memorable performances. He is probably best known for his title role in "Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story." Additionally, he created the beloved doo-wop group, The JD's.
Privately, Don Allison will be remembered as a man of great character and strength. He believed that he was blessed to have cancer and used that conviction to touch many others struggling with the devastating disease. To this end, Donnie and his wife, Stephanie, established Celebrate Today, a foundation created to assist cancer patients with their financial needs not met by insurance. He was a gentle soul drawn to his faith and family, believing that he is victorious in God's promise. A man capable of much love, he continued to bless others even in his last days in this life.
He is survived by his loving wife, Stephanie Huff Allison; his cherished son, Zachary; his proud parents, Wayne and Jane (Shawver) Allison; his sister and brother-in-law, Jana and Steve Jones; his brother, David W.
