Samuel Rogers Harris was from Franklin County. He settled in what would be Vance County. Samuel Rogers Harris was the 2nd child and 2nd son of Benjamin Franklin Harris and Annie Eliza Rogers. He was named for Samuel Rogers who was a minor poet at the time of Lord Byron. The poet Samuel Rogers never married so he was not in a direct line. He was an uncle.

"Was one of the trustees of the First Methodist Church, Henderson, NC on May 30, 1898, when the building lot for the new church was deeded to the trustees. When the First National Bank of Henderson began business on Feb. 15, 1905, Mr. Harris was president. In 1912, he was a member of the Contemporary (literary) Club. He was a younger brother of George Badger Harris .. who married Anna B. Watkins." (Eugene Hicks book). He was a tobacco merchant and owned a tobacco warehouse, and he was a graduate of Western Maryland College. He and his wife Rosalie Melissa Hicks had 9 children (6 girls and 3 boys). Burial for S. R. Harris Sr. 3-31-42

Funeral Is From Residence With Interment In Elmwood Cemetery In Afternoon

Funeral service was held from the home on Oxford road Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock for the late Samuel Rogers Harris, who died Sunday night in his ninetieth year. Rev. B. C. Reavis, pastor of the First Methodist church, was in charge, assisted by Rev. I. W. Hughes, rector of Holy Innocents Episcopal church.

Hundreds of person were at the services, and several trucks were necessary to take the floral designs to the cemetery. Pallbearers were as follows, all active: C. W. Crews, F. B. Robards, H. P. Young, E. C. Kittrell, B. F. Harris, Will Hicks, J. E. Hite, J. E. Rogers, S. T. Peace, Stanley F. Teiser.

Mr. Harris was a prominent churchman and was active in business affairs in the city until he retired some years ago....
