Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he served as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment of Foot, British Army. During an expedition at the Andaman Islands, in the Bay of Bengal, India, May 7, 1867, Private Murphy was one of a party of five in a boat sent to the island to find seven of the crew who had landed from the ship Assam Valley and were feared murdered by the cannibalistic islanders.
