Charlton "Charlie" Eugene Gnadt, 80, of Manassas died Saturday, Oct. 4, at Prince William Hospital in Manassas.
Mr. Gnadt had a long political career in Prince William County beginning in 1949 when he was appointed commissioner of revenue. He was elected to a four-year term in 1951 and re-elected for three successive four-year terms.
He resigned in 1965 to accept a special assignment with U.S. Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr. in Washington.
He was appointed clerk of the Circuit Court for Prince William County in 1973, elected to fill the unexpired term in 1974, and re-elected in 1975 and 1983.
He retired as clerk of the circuit court for the judicial circuit in 1991.
Mr. Gnadt was an Army veteran of World War II. He was involved in numerous community activities.
His survivors include his wife of 55 years, Sophia Wingfield Gnadt; a daughter, Lynn Jenkins Dolce of Manassas; a son, Carlton E. Gnadt Jr. of Woodbridge; two sisters, Irene G. Brinson of Fredericksburg and Linda G. Brannock of Winter Haven, Fla.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held this morning at Buckhall United Methodist Church with burial at Quantico National Cemetery.
Blasius–Baker Funeral Home in Manassas was in charge of arrangements.
