William Merrifield
Birth: Oct. 9, 1890
Death: Aug. 8, 1943

World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the 4th Battalion, 1st Central Ontario Regiment, Canadian Expeditionary Force. At Abancourt, France, October 1, 1918, Sergeant Merrifield's unit was pinned down and unable to move by heavy German machine-gun fire. On his own, Sergeant Merrifield charged out of the shell hole in which he had taken cover and leaping from one shell hole to another attacked two enemy machine-guns single-handed killing it's occupants. Being wounded he continued to lead his platoon forward until another wound forced his evacuation from the field. For most conspicuous bravery, he was invested with his Victoria Cross by King George V on January 26, 1919. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
