Murray Craven Hicks, 89, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011, following a brief illness. Born October 21, 1921, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Charles Wheeler and Evelyne Wallace Hicks.
After graduating from high school, he attended optical school and became a licensed optician. He then entered the United States Army serving his country proudly during World War II in New Guinea as a link trainer instructor and an optician with the 29th Medical Depot Company of the U.S. Army. He received many honors, including Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, APT Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Hicks owned and operated his business, Murray C. Hicks, Dispensing Optician, in the Arcade Building on Main Street. The South Carolina Association of Opticians presented Mr. Hicks with the Icon Award for his many years of outstanding leadership and dedication to his profession. He retired from the optical profession after 47 years of service.
Mr. Hicks was a devoted member of Shandon United Methodist Church for 57 years, serving on various committees and as an usher. He attended church faithfully every Sunday until illness prevented his attendance.
Surviving are his sister, Dorothy H. Dennis of Columbia; nieces and nephews, Susan H. Edwards, Wallis H. Taylor, Paul W. Hicks, David R. Hicks, Charles D. Hicks, H. Woodrow Dennis; and many great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Reginald L. Hicks, Charles Wallace Hicks, J. Linwood Hicks, Lewis E. Hicks, and Maxwell A. Hicks.
Funeral service for Mr. Hicks will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2011, in the mausoleum chapel at Greenlawn Memorial Park with entombment in Greenlawn Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at the mausoleum chapel. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
