Selah was married to Anna (Smith) Strong, the member of the Culper Spy Ring of Setauket, Long Island. He was imprisoned in the Provost in New York City during the American Revolution and was one of the lucky survivors. He was released within seven months and returned to his estate on Mount Misery (modern day Belle Terre and Port Jefferson's Harbor Hills). There he and his wife, Anna "Nancy" Strong, actively assisted in Washington's Culper Spy Ring by hiding Caleb Brewster and his whaleboat crew on their property when they came over from Connecticut to obtain intelligence from the ring. Selah and Anna would move to modern day Strong's Neck after the war when the Loyalist Andrew Seton abandoned the property.
