WELLAND TRIBUNE, JAN 9, 1941:

MRS. R. SHERK - Born on the old Knisley homestead in Humberstone Township 94 years ago, Mrs. Rosanna Sherk, nee Rosanna Knisley, died at noon today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Smith, 74 Major Street, Welland. Deceased had lived for more than 70 years in the old Sherk homestead in Humberstone Township after her marriage. Her husband, Samuel Sherk, predeceased her 30 years ago. She is survived by three children, Wilmer Sherk, Sherkston, Howard F. Sherk, Pittsburgh, Pa., and Grace Pearl (Mrs. Frank Smith) Welland, also by seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Deceased recalled among her varied reminiscences the howling of the wolves at her home as a child and the great size of timbers in her early years, which had since become tremendously reduced by fires and the axe. She remembered the day when her mother had baked a huge batch of bread, only to have it requisitioned by soldiers en route to the battle against Fenians during the Fenian Raid. She was a daughter of Christian and Christina Knisley. Her grandfather came to Welland County from Pennsylvania about 140 years ago. Deceased attended Grace United Brethren Church, Sherkston and had been a member of its WMA. Seven of her children have already passed on. She is survived by two brothers and two sisters.
