Bucks County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Oct. 19, 1930
Berwyn
Chester County

Martin Van Buren Yerkes was the second son and third child of Hiram Yerkes and Anna Lewis Yerkes He was born in the Bucks/Montgomery County Pennsylvania area, and was a harness maker. He was a little short slim man. He married first Mary Jane DuBree, the daughter of Charles DuBree and Mary Kerr.

Martin Yerkes and Mary Jane DuBree had five sons, Charles Hiram Yerkes (1873-1875), William Thompkins Yerkes (1875-1918) who was an organist at a big church in St. David's and died of TB, Carroll Harvey Yerkes (1876-1971) who was a missionary to China, Archibald Murphy Yerkes (1878-1900), and Dawson Martin Yerkes (1882-1962). Three of their sons (Charles, Archie and William) are buried with him and Dawson and his wife are in the next grave.

After the death of Mary Jane DuBree Yerkes in 1897, he married a second time. He had a big house in Berwyn where he lived with his second wife Mariah Watson Yerkes (born in Ireland about 1843 and came to the US in 1847), two of his sisters Phoebe Yerkes an unmarried school teacher, Sally Yerkes Moore (a widow), and Jane Watkins, Mariah's sister. He died when my mother was a senior in college, so she knew him quite well.
