William moved his family to Pittsylvania Co, Va, in the late 1770's & purchased 433 acres of land next to his Uncle Charles Oakes on the east fork of Cascade Creek. In 1777 William took the "Oath of Allegiance" in Pittsylvania Co. He & his small family appear in the 1782 Pittsylvania Co. Tax List. His estate was settled by the October court of 1819. William left a "Negro striker" in the appraisal of his personal property so he may have been a blacksmith by trade.
