In April 1861 John David Myers enlisted in Company D,3rd South Carolina Volunteers. Myers Co D, soon to be called one of the most gallant companies in Kershaw's Brigade," took part in the Battle of Bull Run, the spring 1862 battle at Seven Pines, and the Seven Days battles for Richmond, where Kershaw's Brigade sufferred some of it's heaviest losses.
On December 13, 1862 Myers was wounded severely enough to keep him out of action a year. He was one of the lucky ones, the 3rd S.C. out of 350 men lost six commanders, eighteen lesser officers, and more than 150 enlisted men.
