| Birth: | 1848 New York New York County New York, USA | | Death: | Jun. 20, 1926 Lakeside Henrico County Virginia, USA | Philanthropist. She was the niece of wealthy tobacco manufacturer and developer Lewis Ginter and inherited much of his fortune. She personally financed construction of Richmond's Saint Andrew's Church in 1903 and the first free-circulating library in Richmond in 1899. She financed the tuition-free Saint Andrew's school in 1901 and built the first subsidized housing units in Richmond. Her obituary in the Richmond "News Leader" stated that it would be impossible to list all of the "libraries, recreational centers, schools, churches, hospitals, and similar institutions" that she had funded. Her home, Bloemendaal, would eventually become the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. A fiercely private woman, she refused to be photographed or have her portrait painted, and seldom appeared in public. (bio by: Garver Graver)
