During Operation IMPERIAL LAKE the first wave of Company I, landed at their designated LZ (Landing Zone) in the Que Son Mountains near Hill 341 in Duy Xuyen District and proceeded to sweep for booby traps. Two were discovered in the middle of the LZ and were disarmed, ordered to carefully leave the area but before all the men reached safety, a BT (Booby Trap) believed to have been a 20 or 30 LB Box mine was detonated. The explosion killed LCpl Franklin as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds and eight were wounded a requiring evacuation.
