Played hockey first for the Hollywood Wolves from 1945 to 1946. After leaving the Wolves he signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs and played with them from 1946 to 1951, as a defenseman. On April 21, 1951, he shot a pass by Gerry McNeil of the Montreal Canadiens and scored a goal of 2:53 in overtime and won the Stanley Cup for the Toronto Maple Leafs. This is considered to be the greatest goal in NHL history. Later that year he and a friend set out in an airplane for a fishing trip in Northern Ontario, and disappeared. On June 7, 1962, Bill Barilko's plane and his skeletal remains were found in heavy brush in Cochrane, Ontario. Ironically the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup Again that same year. The Canadian rock band, The Tragically Hip, wrote a song about Bill Barilko and his disappearance. The song was called 'Fifty Mission Cap' (1992). (bio by: K)
