Teacher at SHC Expires
Richard Thomas Briggs, 50, of Water Street, Orbisonia, was dead on arrival at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, January 9, 1977 at the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Death was unexpected. The deceased had taught business education in the Southern Huntingdon County Schools for 21 years. A native of Altoona, he was born September 9, 1926 to Robert M. and Della (Dean) Briggs. On April 5, 1953, he married the former Ruth E. Painter of Rockhill at Trenton, N.J. Surviving are his widow and two daughters, Eileen Ruth, Enola and Sue Ann, at home. There are three sisters, Mrs. Alec (Anna) Fowler, Pitcairn and Mrs. James (Ruth) Newcombe and Mrs. Marshall (Helen) Showalter, both of Huntingdon. A brother Robert and a sister Dorothy preceded in death. The deceased was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Orbisonia, where he belonged to the choir and the Men's Bible Class, and served as a trustee. He was also a member of the Cromwell Lodge No. 572, F&AM, the Harrisburg Consistory, the Orbisonia Lions Club, Madden-Wennick American Legion Post No. 518, Orbisonia, and the Orbisonia - Rockhill Volunteer Fire Company. A graduate of Huntingdon Area High School in the Class of 1944, he received his degree from Ryder College, Trenton, N.J. in 1951. Mr. Briggs belonged to the Southern Huntingdon County Educators Association, the PSEA and NEA. He was a veteran of World War II. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 12, from the Raymond W. Ott funeral home, Orbisonia. The Rev. Kenneth R. Arthur of Mechanicsburg and the Rev. G. Edward Corcelius of Orbisonia will officiate. Burial will be in the Orbisonia Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 7 to 9 o'clock this Tuesday evening, and on Wednesday until time for services. The Cromwell Lodge will conduct Masonic memorial services at 8 o'clock tonight at the funeral home. It is the request of the family that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the choir of the First United Methodist Church, Orbisonia.
