Edward, the son of Edward M. Selkregg Jr. and Naomi J. Selkregg of North East PA, enlisted in the Marine Corps on October 24, 1966 in Cleveland OH. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

At a PPB (Platoon Patrol Base) near the Tuy Loan River in Hieu Duc District the Marines were conducting FAM (Familiarizing with weapons) firing and the registration of their 60 mm mortars. One defensive position on line with the mortar fire was struck by a short round resulting in LCpl Selkregg being accidentally killed by fragmentation wounds.
