ROGERSVILLE - Guy Fred Smith, age 96, Rogersville, died in his sleep Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at his residence at Heritage Manor.

He was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County and was a farmer with the exception of his services as a medical corpsman in World War II. He was a prolific gardener until 2000 and loved to try new plant seeds. He provided financial support and farming advice to many new farmers and home owners in the community. Although he left school in the seventh grade to join his father in the logging business, he valued education and learning. He loved discussing politics, current affairs and was enjoying his third generation of friends in recent years. He was baptized into the Baptist church and supported the Meadowview Methodist Church with his service. He found the presence of God in the beauty of the land and the order of the seasons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth Allen Smith; three sisters, Tillie Matt Eidson, Buena Howe and Edna Ward Collins.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret Lee Smith, Rogersville; a daughter, Diane Lee-Smith, Nashville; many nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in the Broome Funeral Home Chapel, Rogersville, with Revs. Michael Williams and Floyd Looney officiating. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Guy and Margaret Smith Scholarship Fund, c/o Blakemore United Methodist Church, 3601 West End Ave., Nashville, TN 37205.
