Dr Joseph Joshua Lawrence
Birth: Jan. 28, 1836
Edgecombe County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Mar. 14, 1909
New York
New York County (Manhattan)
New York, USA

Born in North Carolina, Lawrence came to St. Louis after studying medicine & commanding a Confederate cavalry unit. In St. Louis he established & edited the highly profitable medical journal "The Medical Brief." In 1879 he invented a disinfectant for surgical procedures & named it after English doctor Joseph Lister. While he was perfecting the formula, now known as Listerine, he befriended a clerk at Mellier Bros. drug store in St. Louis by the name of Jordon Wheat Lambert. They formed the Lambert Pharmical Company. Lawrence eventually sold most of his interest & moved to New York. By 1915, the Lambert Company had marketed Listerine to the public & the mouthwash industry was born. Lambert International Airport is named after Jordan Lamber's son, Albert Bond Lambert. (bio by: Connie Nisinger)
