Edward Hardwicke

Actor. He was best known for his role of Dr. Watson in the Granada Television adaptation of "Sherlock Holmes". Born Edward Cedric Hardwicke in London, son of Sir Cedric Hardwicke and Helena Pickard. He followed his parent's footsteps into the entertainment industry, as he initiated his career in Hollywood at the age of ten with an uncredited part in the Spencer Tracy picture "A Guy Named Joe" (1943). He was educated at Stowe School and completed his National Service as a pilot officer with the RAF, later receiving his training in Dramatics at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Beginning in the 1950s he alternated between films, TV and the theater, as he appeared in the pictures "Hell Below Zero" (1954), "Othello" (1965), and the programs "Danger Man" and "The Wednesday Play", among many others. In 1964, he began a seven-year engagement at Laurence Olivier's National Theatre and shared the stage with Olivier in the productions "Othello" and "The Master Builder". Hardwicke's first recurring TV role was Captain Pat Grant in the series "Colditz" (1972 to 1973), before finding his niche as Dr. Watson opposite Jeremy Brett in the "Sherlock Holmes" series. (bio by: C.S.)
