FRANCISCO, NC ~ Mr. James Osby "J.O." Slate, 93, of Francisco passed away Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at Forsyth Medical Center after an extended illness.

He was born Jan. 16, 1910, in Stokes County to Ed and Elida Rogers Slate.

Mr. Slate was owner and operator of Growers and Big Dollar Tobacco Warehouses in Cookeville, Tenn. He was a deacon and member of Word of God Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Boaz Slate of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Faye Flippin and husband Bill of Winston-Salem and Kaye Spaugh and husband Bob of Winston-Salem; daughter-in-law Mary Sue Dearman Slate of Greensboro; eight grandchildren, Walter Slate, Lisa Gamble, Andy and Matt Flippin, Robert Spaugh, Anna Pulliam and Brandon and Patrick Slate; seven great-grandchildren, Ashley and Preston Gamble, Noah and Claire Flippin, Chris and Samantha Slate and LeAnn Meadows; two great-great-grand-children, Madison and Sophia Meadows; two sisters, Inez Creed of Ararat, N.C., and Thadie Badgett of Mount Airy; and two brothers, Bernie Slate and Grady Slate, both of Mount Airy.

Mr. Slate was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Lois Lavinia Ray Slate; two sons, James Alfred Slate and Osby Gray Slate; daughter Mary Lynn Slate; two sisters, Gurther Nunn and Lula Jessup; and five brothers, Melvin, Cecil, Bob, Luther and Roy Slate.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Word of God Baptist Church, with Brother J.K. Faries and the Rev. Rickey Rogers officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Slate will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church, 30 minutes before the service.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28 at Cox-Needham Funeral Home.

The family would like to express many thanks to the special caregivers to Mr. Slate over the past seven years, Barbara, Bonnie, Mildred, Wanda, Paula, Rhonda and especially Sonya.

The Slate family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.
