Lowell E. Stoten; Feb. 22, 1922 – Apr. 7, 2005

Lowell E. Stoten, 83, of Knightstown, died Thursday, April 7 at Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis.

He was born February 22, 1922 in Rush County, son of the late J. Marion and Ruby (Oldham) Stoten.

Mr. Stoten was a 1940 graduate of Mays High School. He worked for Allison Division of General Motors before being drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in WWII from 1944-1946 and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. Mr. Stoten was the Rush County surveyor for over 30 years.
He worked with the Soil Conservation Service and the Rush County SWCD in the 1960s. Mr. Stoten also farmed for several years. He was a long time member of Center Christian Church where he served as treasurer, deacon, trustee and usher. He was a life member of American Legion Post 152, an associate member of the FOP in Rush County, and an associate member of the Rush County Sheriff’s Association.

Survivors include a son, Jack L. Stoten of Rush County; a daughter, Jean A. (husband Larry) John of Shelby County; a brother, Wendell M. (wife Evelyn) Stoten of Henry County; two granddaughters, Julie (husband Ted) McMichael of Greenfield and Leslie Stoten of Rush County; a grandson, Scott (Becky) Morgan of Indianapolis; two great grandchildren, Carie and Ross McMichael of Greenfield; two nieces and one great nephew of Henry County.

Mr. Stoten married Charlene R. Fortner on November 1, 1941 and she preceded him in death in 2003. Also preceding him in death were his parents and an infant sister.

The funeral was held at Moster & Cox Mortuary on Monday, April 11, with Bill Worrell officiating.

Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery. Military graveside services were observed.

Visitation was held Sunday, April 10, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Center Christian Church.
