He created the James Graham Brown Foundation, which has donated millions of dollars to various charitable, educational and civic organizations, including the Louisville Zoo and the Kentucky Derby Museum. He developed the now Brown Hilton Hotel in downtown Louisville, Kentucky in the 1920s where the "Hot Brown" sandwich was created.
