U.S. Continental Congressman, U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Harvard University in 1782, studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates (1786-89) and served as a member of the Continental Congress in 1788, which ratified the Federal Constitution. In 1797, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifth Congress and to the next eight succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 52. While in office, he was the bearer of dispatches from President John Adams to the Government of France, in 1801 and served as aide to Generals Jacob Brown and Andrew Jackson, in the War of 1812.
